Cougars Notch Seventh Straight Trip to State

Picture
The Cougar boys earned a trip to the WIAA State Championship Meet on Saturday, October 29 by winning the Oregon Sectional.  They scored 31 points, placing four runners in the top-10, and all scorers in the top-15.  Runner-up Madison LaFollette scored 45.

Led by senior Michaela Holzhuter (15:53) and junior Elizabeth Maginot (15:53), the Lady Cougars were fifth overall in the sectional.  Maginot's effort was the lone PR on the day for Craig.

Big Eight Champs!

The Craig boys' team ran to their second Big Eight championship in three years on Saturday at Yahara Running Course in Madison.  Competing in cold weather and strong winds, the Cougars scored 31 points, ahead of runner-up Madison West's 51.

The boys were led by five Big Eight All-Conference performances: Tommy Meister, Spencer Hrycay and Hunter Salmon earned First Team honors, while Evan Lalor and Joe Sarow captured spots on the Second Team.

Freshman Steve Hanson had the lone PR on the boys' side.  He ran to a 46-second personal best effort in the JV-2 race.

The girls' seventh-place effort was paced by seniors Michaela Holzhuter (22nd) and Danica Reinicke (28th).  Junior Elizabeth Maginot was 29th.

Three Lady Cougars earned PRs in their final race of the season:  freshmen Beth Kaveggia and Aleka Reese, along with sophomore Marina Valdes.  Incredibly, Kaveggia and Reese have now improved over seven minutes this season, and Valdes by over five.

The varsity teams look to earn a trip to the WIAA State Championship meet this Saturday at Lake Farm Park in Madison.  Oregon High School will host the WIAA Sectional Championship beginning at 10:30 with the girls.  The boys race at 11:15 and look to extend their state qualifying streak to seven.  The girls have competed at the WIAA State Championship nine of the past ten seasons.

Teams from four states, representing over 40 high schools, will converge at Blackhawk Golf Course in Janesville on Saturday, September 24 for the 74th running of the Midwest Invitational.  Houston MacArthur (TX), Dubuque Senior (IA), Lake Park (IL) and Rockford Guilford (IL) comprise the four out of state competitors in the annual event.

The races begin at 9:15 and the event concludes with a 1-mile middle school race at 12:40.  Parking at the event is restricted to the Palmer Park area and Palmer Drive, west of Sharon Rd. toward Beloit Ave.  Palmer Dr., between Racine St. and Sharon Rd., will be closed beginning at 9:00 AM for the event.

Midwest's Elite Prepare for Fast Day

The boys' race features ten of Wisconsin's ranked teams, including the #1 team in all three WIAA cross country divisions.  The top-ranked, defending WIAA state champion Hartland Arrowhead Warhawks will look to defend their Midwest championship from a year ago.  The Warkhawks were recently ranked #13 in the National ESPN HS Powerade Fab-50.

Along with them, four other division-1 ranked teams are in the field:  Janesville Craig (#2), LaCrosse Logan (#4), Madison LaFollette (#10) and Mequon Homestead (#15).   Making the field even stronger will be three division-2 ranked teams:  Wisconsin Lutheran (#1), Monroe (#4), Dodgeville-Mineral Point (#9).   The third #1 team in the race will be Darlington.  The Redbirds are the top team in WIAA division-3.  Albany is ranked #7 in D-3.  If that's not enough, three-time Midwest Invite champion Lake Park (IL), three-time winner Dubuque Senior (IA) and four-time champ Houston MacArthur (TX) join the field from outside Wisconsin.

Individually, the pace will be fierce.  Tommy Meister (senior, Janesville Craig, 2010 WIAA cross country runner-up, 2011 WIAA 800m state champion) looks to defend his 2010 title against many of the midwest's elite racers.  Seniors Russ Sandvold (Hartland Arrowhead, 6th in 2010, 2011 WIAA 1600m state champion) and Kyle Lewin (Hartland Arrowhead, 7th in 2010) along with juniors Trevor Wunnicke (Dodgevill-Mineral Point, 8th) and Chandler Diffee (Madison LaFollette) figure to be in the mix.  Several other runners in the field have broken the 16-minute barrier so far this season and could contend.  Meister's 15:29 in the 2010 event set the current record for the 5000 meter (3.1 miles) course.

The boys' varsity race begins at 11:00.

The girls' 2011 race features fantastic competition once again.  Eight ranked Wisconsin teams join the field, including the top three division-1 teams:  Neenah (#1, defending Midwest team champion), Hartland Arrowhead (#2) and Madison West (#3, 2009 Midwest champion).  Beaver Dam (#12) and Whitnall (#13)  round out the D-1 ranked team competing Saturday.  Three other teams in division-2 and 3 look to make the competition even stronger: the #1 ranked, and defending WIAA state champion, Dodgeville-Mineral Point girls along with #6 Wisconsin Lutheran come from D-2.  WIAA division-3 Darlington is ranked #5 in the state.

University Lake School's Molly Seidel (senior, 2010 WIAA D-3 cross country state champion, 2011 WIAA 1600m and 3200m state champion) looks to defend her 2010 Midwest Invitational title.  Seidel tied the 4000m (2.5 miles) course record of 13:55 in last season's race.  Seidel ran 13:34 at the Arrowhead Invitational on September 8, which was the fastest time recorded in Wisconsin state history.

Including Seidel, the top four girls return from a year ago, including senior Tricia Serres (Platteville, 2nd in 2010) and Madison West standout Olivia Pratt (3rd).  Sophomore Jackie Dubnicka (Hartland Arrowhead, 4th) rounds out the top four.

The girls' varsity race begins at 10:25.

The boys' team earned an impressive 16 personal bests and the girls' added another three at the Big 8 Grade Level Challenge on  Tuesday night at Warner Park on Madison's east side.

Freshmen Brett Ziebell and Larson Arrowood led both teams with over one-minute of improvement on the 5000m course.  The girls were led in the PR department by sophomore Hilary Kraus, who ran to a 29-second personal best.

The boys were third in the team event and the girls ran to a fifth place finish.  The Grade Level Challenge is scored differently than a regular cross country meet.  Each team counts its top seven places in ANY grade level with a perfect score being a score of 10 (1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd).  The boys missed the team title by two points, scoring 33 to Madison LaFollette's 31 and Madison West's 32.  The girls scored 74.  Madison West's third-ranked squad ran to the title with an incredible 13 points.

Both teams will look to improve on September 24 at the 74th annual Midwest Invitational in Janesville.

Craig Boys Earn Highest Ranking in History
In other exciting Craig Cross news, the boys' team earned the #2 spot in the latest WCCCA state rankings.  It marks the highest ever ranking for a Cougar team.  Hartland Arrowhead remained the #1 team, while Stevens Point, DC Everest and LaCrosse Logan round out the top-five.

The Cougars are getting stronger.  Through the mud and hills of Verona to the fast flats of Hartland, the Craig cross country teams are knocking off time and racing like a team.

The Cougar girls' team finished 6th and 7th respectively at the tough Verona and Arrowhead invites over the past week.  The Lady Cougars notched an impressive 12 personal bests at Arrowhead on Thursday.  Marina Valdes led the team in improvement knocking 3:50 off her previous best, while freshman Beth Kaveggia leads the team with an incredible 6:28 in season improvement.

The boys' team won at Verona and took second to the state's top-ranked team, Arrowhead, at the Arrowhead Invitational this week.

The boys' varsity team knocked off Big 8 rivals Madison LaFollette and Madison West on their way to the Verona title and ran a great team race Thursday night to capture second-place behind the top-ranked Hartland Arrowhead team.

Senior Tommy Meister defended his individual titles at both events and freshman Christian Gilmore led wire to wire to win the Arrowhead freshmen title in a 4K time of 14:32.

Next up for the Cougars is the Big 8 Grade Level Challenge at Warner Park in Madison.
